Variable displacement adalah teknologi yang memungkinkan silinder mesin berhenti bekerja pada saat beban mesin berkurang, dan akan aktif lagi jika mesin membutuhkannya. Dengan begitu, konsumsi bahan bakar juga akan lebih irit.
Teknologi ini diklaim dapat membuat konsumsi bahan bakar berkurang hingga 10 persen. Begitu juga dengan teknolgi mild hybrid.
Sementara teknologi mild hybrid adalah teknologi memungkinkan kerja mesin dibantu oleh motor listrik. Ini agak beda dengan teknologi hybrid pada umumnya, dimana motor dapat menjadi penggerak mobil secara independen atau standalone engine.
Mereka menyebut teknologi mild hybrid dapat diaplikasikan pada beragam model. Sementara teknologi variable displacement akan diterapkan pertama-tama pada sport utilitv vehicle (SUV) andalan, CX-5.
Mazda bukan yang pertama. Kala mereka masih berencana, Suzuki telah mengaplikasikannya pada Eriga Diesel Hybrid yang dipasarkan di Indonesia.
