Penjelasan Kenapa Ada Istilah Tenaga Kuda dalam Dunia Otomotif
Horse Power (Hp), atau Tenaga Kuda (Tk), adalah salah satu satuan pengukuran paling populer dalam industri otomotif. Ia jadi acuan seberapa besar tenaga yang dimiliki sebuah mesin.
Meski memang faktanya ia bukanlah satu-satunya satuan yang berkaitan dengan tenaga mesin. Masih ada pferdestärke (Ps), brake-horsepower (BHP), kilowatts (Kw), dan lain-lain.
Nah, sebetulnya, apakah yang dimaksud dengan Tk ini? Dari mana asal usulnya? Kenapa ia jadi satuan pada mesin? BBC Earth Lab baru-baru ini menjelaskannya.
Dikutip dari Laman liputan6, Semua bermula dari proyek James Watt, pekerja di Universitas Glasgow, Skotlandia, pada 1763. Kita semua tahu, James Watt adalah penemu mesin uap. Ia pertama kali menjual produknya itu pada 1776 kepada para petani dan penambang.
Watt, dan juga tim pemasaran mesin uap, ingin teknologi terbaru ini dapat diterima masyarakat dengan mudah. Masalahnya, untuk itu mereka perlu materi kampanye, yang pada intinya adalah menunjukkan keunggulan produk yang mereka miliki.
Di sinilah Tk berasal. Kala itu, kuda (dalam bahasa Inggris horse) adalah hewan pengangkut dan transportasi utama. Masalahnya, kuda punya batasan fisik. Sementara mesin uap, di satu sisi dibuat untuk menggantikan kuda ini.
Watt menyadari itu. Makanya kemudian, ia menciptakan formulasi khusus yang menghitung tenaga mesin tunggal (single engine) jika dibandingkan dengan kuda. Ia menemukan, tenaga beberapa ekor kuda setara dengan tenaga satu unit mesin itu.
Watt sebetulnya ingin menunjukkan seberapa unggul teknologi buatannya itu jika dibandingkan dengan moda pengangkut tradisional.
Menurut sumber, untuk menentukan kekuatan kuda, Watt mempelajari kuda poni (kuda kecil) dan kuda yang lebih besar, yaitu kuda-kuda yang dipekerjakan di pertanian.
Dari hitung-hitungannya itu, Watt mendapati bahwa satu ekor kuda rata-rata dapat mengangkat beban 33 ribu pounds sepanjang satu kaki (sekira 30 centimeter) dalam waktu satu menit (dengan memasukkan variabel gravitasi bumi).
Penemuannya kemudian dibakukan dan jadi standar. Bahkan hingga saat ini, ketika satu unit mesin mobil bahkan ada yang bertenaga lebih dari 1.000 Tk.
Standar itu aneh juga. Skuter dengan tenaga beberapa kali tenaga kuda apa ya dijamin bisa menarik dokar.
